Dear Faculty,
On behalf of all faculty, staff, administration, and students, we are pleased to welcome you to Delaware County Community College. This institution is competency and outcomes based, and prides itself on excellence in teaching.
Faculty are encouraged to actively engage and utilize our programs to increase student success and retention. Among these student-centered programs are Starfish, Degree Works, and ALP (Accelerated Learning Program), just to name a few that we hope you will explore. Other programs including Conferencing, Mentoring, and Early Alert are available as you support the students in your classes and your advisees. We also want to encourage you to use Canvas, our Learning Management System, for your classes. Training is available through the Center.
Student success is a College priority, and all of us must involve ourselves in the conversation and programs which revolve around improving student retention and educational goal achievement. We encourage you to become involved in these important initiatives.
Assessment and data-driven decision making are two of the driving forces in education today. The division meetings, in-service sessions, and continuing professional development need to focus on each of our efforts in these areas. Whether it is course assessment, program review, or collectively answering questions about what the associate degree qualifies and enables a graduate to do, each of us will be asked to respond in a meaningful way to the questions of why and how. We will be talking about these topics at faculty forums held throughout the year.
Personal professional development is a priority at our College and exists at the College in several ways. Our in-service offerings are based on both faculty and administrative input with the Professional Development Committee creating the actual agenda. As another example of our professional development opportunities, there is a College partnership with Widener University that offers graduate coursework on the Marple campus, Widener campus, and/or online. Widener offers our faculty, administrators, and staff courses in leadership in higher education, as well as a new online Certificate Program in Leadership and Practice.
At the heart of your professional growth at the College is the Carter Center for Excellence. Karen Gonzales, Tina Payne, and Lori Wushensky assist faculty with instructional design, the use of technology, and assessment options. Group and individual sessions to review the latest in technology, as well as our Learning Management System, Canvas, can be arranged easily by contacting the Center. Additional Center projects include the Faculty Fellows program, Educational Foundation Mini-grants, Honors Option program, support for Experiential Learning initiatives, and Quality Matters (QM) just to name a few.
