Delaware County Community College Partners with County to Launch New Teacher Education Program for High School Juniors
(Delaware and Chester Counties, PA - July 25, 2023)—Thanks to a new program launched by Delaware County Community College and Delaware County Council, high school juniors interested in teaching careers can now attend the College and earn up to 38 credits toward a degree in education—at no cost to them or their families.
Intended to address the critical shortage of teachers in the county, the two-year Teacher Education Program is open to current high school juniors in Fall 2023. Students enrolled in the program will attend classes at Delaware County Community College’s Marple Campus. Those who complete all two years will earn 38 college credits from the College. These credits can be transferred into an associate degree program at the College or used to transfer into a four-year institution such as West Chester University.
“In response to the current statewide and regional teacher shortage, Delaware County Community College has created a new, two-year Teacher Education Program for high school juniors through funding by the Delaware County Council,” said Marta Yera Cronin, Ed.D., President of Delaware County Community College. “At no cost to students, their families, or the school districts, candidates can complete 38 credits toward an associate or bachelor's degree in education. This program hopes to shorten the time to prepare up to 70 students as qualified teaching professionals.”
Delaware County Council unanimously voted to approve funding for this new Teacher Education Program during its July 5 public meeting.
