This course will focus on the residents of Philadelphia and the surrounding region from 1740 to 1865 and explore their roles in the economic, political, and military history of the United States. Topics will include: Samuel Morris’ involvement in colonial Philadelphia’s economy and Quaker community. William West’s role in Native American affairs during the French and Indian War. The Continental Army’s Whitemarsh Encampment during Philadelphia Campaign of 1777. The Egg Harbor Guards and Cape May Navy in the American War for Independence. Members of the Wentz and Watmough families in the Pennsylvania Militia, US Army, and Navy during the American War for Independence, War of 1812, Mexican/American War, and American Civil War.
