Season Review: Women’s Basketball Lays Foundation for Future Success
Signature Win: The Phantoms overcame adversity to hold on for a 50-47 victory over Lehigh Carbon Community College on Dec.3. “We had two players foul out and were still mentally tough enough to pull out the win,” added head coach Dawn Grant. Tied at the end of three quarters, the Phantoms outscored the Cougars 11-8 in the fourth to earn the hard-fought victory. Paige Patterson and Bryce Johnson led the way with 17 and 14 points, respectively.
Season Notes: The Phantoms, competing at the club level for 2019-20, finished 5-9 overall. The five wins on the season matched the single-season victory mark for wins since joining the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) … The team scored a season-high 86 points in a victory over Harrisburg Area Community College on Nov. 16 which also included season-high marks in field goals (38) and assists (21) … The Phantoms shot a season-best 62.5 percent from the field (20-for-32) in a narrow 53-49 loss to Camden County College on Dec.7 … Showing evidence of a season of growth, the Phantoms suffered a narrow 53-47 loss to Bucks County Community College on Jan.16 but not before coming back from a 20-point deficit to almost claim victory. “I felt like this was a defining moment for our team because Bucks initially beat us by 40-plus points in an early-season scrimmage,” offered Grant … Patterson led the squad with 13.0 points per game and 3.9 steals per game while also topping the squad with a 72.6 percent mark from the free throw line … Lorraine Marrone paced the team with 9.2 rebounds per game … Paige Wright was the team leader in assists with 3.2 per contest … Johnson, Marrone and Wright started all 14 contests for the Phantoms with Johnson ranking first in minutes played at an average of 30.5 … The 2019-20 campaign marked the first year on the sidelines for head coach Dawn Grant. Grant beamed with the pride over her first year on the sidelines. “The coaching staff is extremely proud of how our players competed all season,” said Grant. “Each player improved in all aspects of the game and they were a pleasure to coach.”
