Acclaimed Local Artist to Give Lecture December 6
(Delaware and Chester Counties, PA • November 17, 2017)—On Wednesday, December 6, acclaimed painter and Philadelphia-based educator Odili Donald Odita will give an artist’s lecture in the Large Auditorium in the Academic Building at Delaware County Community College (901 S. Media Line Road, Media, PA). The event begins at 4 p.m. and is free and open to the public, however, reservations are strongly recommended and can be made at www.dccc.edu/gallery.
Born in Enugu, Nigeria, and raised in the American Midwest, Odita cites his dual identity as an influence for his large-scale, vibrant work, which fuses together elements of African culture and Western modernism. His abstract paintings utilize an earthy African palette and explore color from a sociopolitical and historical sense. He resides in Philadelphia where he serves as an Associate Professor of Fine Art at Tyler School of Art at Temple University. He was included in the 52nd Venice Biennale in 2007 and has had numerous exhibitions around the world, including at the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University; Jack Shaiman Gallery in New York; the Studio Museum in Harlem; Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati; Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco; Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston; Studio Museum in Harlem; Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia; Ulrich Museum of Art in Wichita; and Princeton University.
Odita’s lecture precedes the opening of the College’s 215|610 CONTEMPORARY Juried Exhibition of Regional Emerging Artists for which he served as a guest juror. The exhibition features the work of 42 local artists and is on display until January 11. To learn more, visit www.dccc.edu/gallery.
