Alumni Profile - Nancy Haslam '06

National Nurses Week is celebrated annually May 6-12 and the Alumni Association would like to share the story of a nursing graduate who came to our attention in a special way. Nancy Haslam ’06 was nominated for the 2015 Wong Moss Outstanding Alumni Award as a surprise by her fiancée. In his nomination, he spoke of her balancing multiple but equally important responsibilities. "She is very dedicated to her career and family, but most of all, making a difference in the mental health field," he wrote. "She manages a full-time job, her school work and our children. She is extremely motivated and truly believes she can make a difference." Nancy was not selected as this year’s Wong Moss Award recipient but we think she still came out a winner. Thank you to Nancy and all the nurses working in the field for all you do to help in people’s time of need.
What year did you graduate from Delaware County Community College and with what degree?
"I graduated from Delaware County Community College 2006 with my associate degree in Nursing."
Did you pursue further academic goals?
"In 2009 I re-enrolled in school, this time online, for my Bachelor's of Science of Nursing and graduated Summa Cum Laude. Last October, I decided to advance my nursing education once again and enrolled in a master’s program. The focus of my Masters of Science in Nursing is Education."
Where are you now?
"My passion for nursing is behavioral health. I enjoy working with dually diagnosed, chronically mentally ill and substance dependent clients. I find this area is the most rewarding for me and where I feel I can make the most difference. I have been very blessed in my career and currently hold the role of Nurse Executive/ Director of Nursing."
What is next for you professionally?
"Once I complete my master’s coursework, one of my biggest goals is to be able to teach. I love teaching nurses, especially those who are new to the profession. In behavioral health there is always so much to learn and the climate in healthcare is rapidly changing in this field."
What is your favorite memory of your time on campus, outside of the classroom?
"Every few months, a few of us would choose to head out to a local restaurant. We would enjoy our time out of the classroom getting to know each other. We have all remained friends and are still in contact with each other. It has been wonderful, especially since we have all chosen different areas of nursing."
Did you have a favorite professor or class during your studies?
"Hands down, Professor Melony Leroy, who always encouraged me to follow my passion in nursing. Professor Leroy was great at putting things into perspective. She was an amazing resource and was my role model for what a nurse ‘should be.’ I truly believe her support and encouragement got me through that first year."
What advice would you give to current students and Alumni to capitalize on the education they received from the College?
"Never stop learning. Whether it’s continuing your formal education or following the most up-to-date literature, continue to grow. Healthcare changes so rapidly that nurses always need to stay abreast of the latest developments and technologies. I also believe very strongly in teamwork and collaboration. Surrounding yourself with positive, educated people in your profession, whatever that may be, attributes to a pleasant, productive work environment."
