Diary of a Print Portfolio: Inside and Outside the Clamshell Box
(Media, PA) —The Performing and Visual Arts Department of Delaware County Community College is proud to present Inside and Outside the Clamshell Box – Diary of a Portfolio. The exhibit will run from December 14, 2010, to January 25, 2011, in the College's Gallery, located in Academic Building (room 2305). Admission is free and open to the public. A closing reception is scheduled for Tuesday, January 25 (4 to 7 p.m.).
The highlighted work in this exhibit is the Mark/Remarque portfolio - an original work of art that was made in commemoration of a citywide celebration of prints. Artists who contributed the Clamshell demonstrated their craft, with the knowledge it would probably only be seen in public a very few times. These works are destined to be stored on a shelf in someone’s home, studio or in limited access in a library reading room.
A print portfolio, stored in a clamshell box, rarely sees the light of day. It is made as a commemoration of an event, or is an agreement to exchange prints among colleagues, or perhaps as a limited commercial enterprise. Artists contribute an image that adheres to certain guidelines such as size and theme, but often everything else is at the discretion of the artist.
Printmaking is a discipline that includes widely variant techniques such as monoprint, relief, etching, lithography, collotype, screen-printing and offset, all of which appear in the portfolio, often in combination.
"It occurred to me that it would be interesting to present the portfolio once again and invite artists to reveal their individual studio practice: to exhibit works, regardless of scale or medium in addition to their portfolio print. Artists were intrigued to have a unique opportunity to demonstrate to the public additional facets of their breadth and output," stated Cheryl Harper, curator of the exhibit.
Rochelle Toner, Dean Emeritus of Tyler School of Art, and a prolific printmaker and draughtswoman, invited artists to participate in this portfolio. The participants are a who’s-who of regional artists. Many teach art at universities, and some have achieved the highest recognition in their field. However, in a group portfolio, artists come together as equals.
The Gallery is open to the public Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Delaware County Community College is located on Route 252 at Media Line Road.
