College Presents Music Symposium by University of the Arts Professor
Media, PA – October 11, 2010 The College's Student History Club is hosting a symposium by Dr. Chris Devenney, professor of literature at University of the Arts, on "The African Roots of American Popular Music and the Origin of the Blues." The event will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 27, from12:15 -1:10 p.m. at Delaware County Community College in the Main Auditorium
Dr. Chris Devenney is originally from Delaware County and holds a Ph.D. in Composition Literature from SUNY Buffalo. He also studied at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. He lives in Philadelphia and is currently an adjunct professor at University of the Arts and Bucks County Community College.
The lecture includes musical accompaniment that highlights patterns of music developed in the colonial and early American times. The African American musical experience and involvement at that time has formed the basis for popular music in the 20th century.
The symposium is sponsored by the Division of Public Services and Social Science and Campus Life, which includes the College's Student History Club - aka the Supreme Council of Antiquities.
