Theatre Department Presents Travesties

(Delaware and Chester Counties, PA)—Don’t miss Delaware County Community College’s spring theatre production of Travesties. The show runs from April 18-21 and April 25-28. All performances begin at 7 p.m. in the Academic Building’s Large Auditorium on the Marple Campus (901 S. Media Line Road, Media, PA). Tickets are $6 at the door.
Presented by the Theatre Arts department, Travesties, a comedy by Sir Thomas Stoppard, chronicles the memories of British consular officer Henry Carr. While living in Zurich during World War I, Carr becomes acquainted with three famous personalities: Vladimir Lenin, James Joyce and Tristan Tzara (founder of the Dadaist aesthetic movement). As Carr recants his memories of these notable individuals, he leads the audience on a wild ride through the distracted maze of his mind with unexpected and hilarious results.
“My hope is that audiences will laugh and be entertained, but that they also will have learned something about a very interesting period in history and the arts,” says Stephen Smith, theatre director and Assistant Professor of Communications, Arts and Humanities. “Maybe they will decide to further investigate people like James Joyce, Oscar Wilde, Lenin, and Tristan Tzara, all of whom changed the way we think about politics and the arts.”
The all-student cast includes Jonny Long as Henry Carr; Dan Romano as Tristan Tzara; Nick Roscioli as James Joyce; Isabella Fehlandt as Cecily Carruthers; Sarah Vuocolo as Gwendolen Carr; Sam Fernandez and Christopher Zuppo as Vladimir Ilyich (Lenin); Alexandra Watt and Madalyn DeFelice as Nadya (Mrs. Lenin); and Qaaim Walker as Bennett. Students are also part of the stage crew and have worked tirelessly to recreate World War I through sets and costumes.
The Drama Department produces two plays each year and is committed to providing a comprehensive theatre education to students. In turn, the community can enjoy vibrant, thought-provoking productions right in their backyard. Recent productions have included Much Ado About Nothing, Arsenic and Old Lace and King Lear.
