(Delaware and Chester Counties, PA)—Beginning this fall, Delaware County Community College will offer a Culinary Arts Certificate program at its new Brandywine Campus (443 Boot Road, Downingtown, PA). Through a combination of academic courses, hands-on training and an optional internship, the 27-credit program will prepare students for employment in various segments of the foodservice industry.
While working in a brand-new, professional kitchen, students will learn everything they need to know about food preparation, cooking, baking, customer service, menu planning and safety and sanitation. Upon graduation they’ll be able to demonstrate various cooking methods and appropriate presentation techniques, produce foods that meet employers’ standards and satisfy consumer demands, and seek employment in a wide variety of foodservice operations.
The program is a great option for individuals looking to sharpen their skills, those seeking a career change or those who’ve always had a passion for the culinary arts. After completing the certificate, students can find work or transfer into a bachelor’s degree program.
Offered in two options—a day session from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and an evening session from 6 to 10 p.m.—the program also answers a regional demand for skilled culinary artisans. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, chefs, cooks and food preparation workers held more than 2.8 million jobs in 2000, with employment expected to remain steady through 2020. As new restaurants continue to open in the Philadelphia region, the local demand for foodservice professionals will only increase.
The College’s Brandywine Campus is located within the Technical College High School Brandywine and is part of a joint venture with the Chester County Intermediate Unit. In addition to the Culinary Arts certificate, the College will offer traditional and non-credit culinary courses as well as high school enrichment classes.
