(Delaware and Chester Counties, PA)— Delaware County Community College’s men’s basketball team continues its historic season this Saturday, February 18, at 7 p.m. in the Eastern Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference’s (EPCC) Final Four tournament. If the Phantoms win the semi-final round they will compete in the championship game on Sunday at 5 p.m. The College’s athletic department is hosting the conference at Widener University’s Schwartz Athletic Center (One University Place, Chester, PA). The tournament is free and open to the public.
The Phantoms, who finished this season with a record of 19 wins and two losses, are no strangers to the Final Four. They played in last year’s tournament and are eager to compete for a conference championship that has eluded them since 1996.
“The team started in October with a lot of individual talent and a plan from Coach Dwayne Saunders,” says Andrew Johnson Jr., Director of Wellness, Athletics and Recreation. “As the wins began to pile up the team got better and more confident. They are playing their best basketball right now and are excited about the opportunity to compete for a championship.”
“We’ve really worked on developing our bonding skills this season,” adds Dameian Winns, Basketball Manager. “Through collaboration and teamwork we’ve had a great year, and the entire team is ready to try and win the championship.”
This season is the Phantoms last in the EPCC, so they are excited to possibly win the final basketball championship in the conference. Next year, the Phantoms will play in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). Moving to the NJCAA will give student-athletes at the College the opportunity to compete at the national level against stronger competition. The association also promotes stronger academic standards, so students will be better prepared to transfer to a four-year institution.
