Dr. Lisa Barnes Honored with Distinguished Teaching Award
(Delaware and Chester County, PA, May 31, 2011) Dr. Lisa A. Barnes, professor, Communications Arts and Humanities, received the Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Foundation Distinguished Teaching Award at a ceremony on May 3, 2011. Dr. Jerry Parker, president, and Dr. Virginia Carter, provost presented the award.
Dr. Barnes, who resides in Medford, NJ, has taught at the College since January 1999. Prior to that, she was a tenured professor at Harrisburg Area Community College.
Her peers, who praised her ability to motivate students to read, for establishing a College-wide reading program and other activities focusing on reading, her specialty, nominated Dr. Barnes. She was also recognized for her involvement with other College activities, promoting the use of technology and the development of curricula. She has presented at international, national and local conferences and been recognized for her service to fellow faculty members as well as the College.
Dr. Barnes holds a doctorate in Reading/Writing/Literacy from the University of Pennsylvania. She earned her master’s degree by research in English from the University of Newcastle in New South Wales, Australia. She received a bachelor’s degree in English and Philosophy from Lafayette College.
Previously, Dr. Barnes was honored with a Rotary Foundation Scholarship to complete her master’s degree in Australia. While teaching at Harrisburg Area Community College, she received the Honors Teacher Award. Additionally, she won a Horizon Award for New Advisors, which recognized her work as a previous advisor to the Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society at Delaware County Community College. Her publications include articles, textbooks, and supplemental materials.
The Lindback Distinguished Teaching Award is presented annually to full-time faculty who demonstrate excellence in teaching students at colleges and universities, primarily in the Greater Delaware Valley region. The award is made possible by the Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Foundation, Philadelphia.
