(Delaware/Chester Counties, PA)—Bertha Steinhardt Gutman’s Table-Top Narratives (1991-2011) will be on view from January 19 through February 17, 2012 in the Art Gallery at Delaware County Community College (901 South Media Line Road, Media, PA). An opening reception will occur on Thursday, January 19 from 11 AM to 3 PM as well as a gallery talk with the artist on January 24 at 11 AM. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
Table-Top Narratives features 31 oil paintings created by Gutman, a Professor of Studio Art and Art History and the A.F.A. Program Coordinator at Delaware County Community College. In each painting, she’s replaced the human figure with various surrogate dolls, figurines and statues. These include classical sculptures, historical icons and pop culture figures such as Barbie and Mr. Potato Head.
“Often, my work employs a wide range of popular imagery from disparate sources within a post-modern medley of fun,” she says. “I have a great time and often a good chuckle while setting up my still-life scenarios. Perception and the wondrous act of seeing and painting are always of prime concern to me.”
In 2011, Gutman was selected as a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Scholar and spent four weeks in India studying the country’s historical and cultural development. Her work has appeared in various exhibits and collections, including the National Association of Women Artists Collection at Rutgers University. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
The gallery is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, please call 610-359-5341 or visit dccc.edu/the-arts.
