Summer Internships in Marketing, IT and Science Position DCCC Students for Career Success
(Delaware and Chester Counties, PA - September 10, 2024)—Internships help college students get experience in specific career fields, increase their confidence and gain an edge over other candidates when applying for jobs. The Vanguard Group, the County of Delaware, The Wistar Institute and Rosati Water Ice are just a few of the places Delaware County Community College students could be found working as interns this summer. They spearheaded digital marketing campaigns, worked in information technology and network engineering roles, conducted advanced biomedical research and more, adding value to their host organizations while burnishing their resumes.
The internships were facilitated by DCCC’s Student Employment and Co-op Center, which offers a Co-op Education and Internships Program. Students can receive college credit and can be paid.
Business Administration major Ella Ferris of Devon spent the summer as an editorial and writing intern for Malvern’s The Vanguard Group, working in Vanguard’s in-house marketing agency. “I had the privilege of collaborating with incredibly talented individuals, all united by a shared passion for creativity and innovation,” she said. That experience helped her land another gig as a lead generation intern for Wayne-based insurance company USLI. “I am deeply grateful to Delaware County Community College for its unwavering support and the incredible opportunities it provides.”
Alexandra Showers of Brookhaven, a Network Engineering major, worked as an IT intern for the County of Delaware in Media. “DCCC gave me the guidance to apply to an internship that exactly matched what I was looking for,” she said. “I learned valuable information and developed new skills.” After she completed her internship, the County offered her a full-time job. Business Administration major Mohamed Diakite of Drexel Hill and Computer Science major Ayoola Shomotun of Upper Darby were also summer IT interns for the County of Delaware.
Shane Justice of West Chester, a Business Administration major, was a digital marketing and merchandising intern for Clifton Heights-based Rosati Water Ice. That experience helped him land a fall internship—as a personalization and dynamic digital marketing intern with SAP America Inc. in Newtown Square. After graduating from DCCC he will complete his bachelor’s degree at Drexel University and pursue a career in data marketing. “DCCC gave me access to real-world experiences that let me combine my classroom curriculum with hands-on work skills, making me a stronger candidate for job applications, and a more well-rounded person overall,” he said.
Sara Alkurdi of Bryn Mawr, Marie Aude Bley of Upper Darby, Tatiana Bowman-Vailes of Collingdale, Kenechukwu Ilodigwe of Aldan, Karina Juarez of Collingdale, Adrian Mykhnych of West Chester and Jay Rhoades of Ridley Park were selected for The Wistar Institute’s highly competitive Biotechnical Technician Training Program. The Wistar Institute is a Philadelphia-based global leader in biomedical research with special expertise in cancer, immunology, infectious disease and vaccine development.
For Bowman-Vailes, a Computer Science major, the internship solidified her interest in bioinformatics, which uses computational tools to analyze biological data from labs studying various pathogens and diseases. She hopes to pursue a master’s degree and land a position as a bioinformatician/research technician.
Ilodigwe, who is majoring in Natural Science, enjoyed the chance to jump-start her dream of improving the lives of those fighting serious illnesses and helping prevent diseases. “The internship has broadened my perspective on research and how to think like a scientist. I am forever grateful for this opportunity.”
