New Music Concert Series Presents Marinescu & Belcastro
(Delaware and Chester Counties, PA • March 15, 2017)—Delaware County Community College will host the world premiere of performances by musicians Richard Belcastro and Ovidiu Marinescu on Sunday, March 26, on the Marple Campus (901 South Media Line Road, Media, PA). Marinescu and Belcastro will play a collection of innovative solo works and duets for cello and sitar. The event begins at 3 p.m. in the Large Auditorium and is the final show in this season’s New Music Concert Series.
Marinescu is a Romanian-born cellist and conductor who has performed with symphonies and musicians around the world. Known for his powerful interpretations of orchestral works by Russian composers, Marinescu was invited to record Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 and Marche Slave with the Russian Philharmonic Orchestra in Moscow. Currently, he is a member of Trio Casals and is the Director of the West Chester University Symphony.
Belcastro is an active composer, sitarist and musical activist in the Philadelphia area. The New York Concert Review called his music “an eclectic blend of melodic and rhythmic elements of jazz and rock and roll with a uniquely contemporary harmonic vocabulary.” His music is composed for a variety of instrumental combinations ranging from the traditional to the distinctly odd and also ventures into electro-acoustic music and purely electronic explorations.
The performance will feature Belcastro’s compositions Lullaby of a Restless Mind, Siena Rose, Brandywine Drift, and Yugala II, and Marinescu’s works The Midnight Call of the Satanic Nightjar, Ya Mama Ate a Punjabi Po’Boy, and Sunt Numai Urechi (I’m All Ears).
The event is sponsored by the Communications, Arts & Humanities Division. Tickets are $10 and available at the door. For more information, visit www.dccc.edu/concerts or contact Caitlin Flaherty, Assistant to the Dean for Arts Programming, at 610-359-5266.
