Lean Toolbox 101: The Fundamentals of Zero Defects (6 hours)

Lean is a philosophy that intends to affect the culture of any workplace from manufacturing to healthcare. The goal of Lean is to strive for zero defects when related to the processes employees and managers utilize every day. This course will provide employees with basic knowledge of how to look at their jobs in a new light and make them as efficient as possible, ultimately creating a winning workplace culture and increasing the bottom line.

Lean Toolbox 102: Kaizen Principle (6 hours)

The Kaizen Principle was created by Toyota over 40 years ago. Kaizen, which in Japanese translates to “good change,” is based upon the belief that continuous, incremental improvement adds up to significant change over time. Students will be introduced to the core tenets of continuous improvement; standardizing processes; focusing on measurability and evaluation of data; comparing results against requirements; innovating new and better habits; responding to changing circumstances and evolving your methods over time.

Lean Toolbox 103: Value Stream Mapping (6 hours)

Value Stream Mapping is an essential Lean tool which allows you to see a top-down overview of your business processes. Students will be trained to take a realistic look at internal processes and identify waste and inefficiencies. Additionally, students will be taught to approach wasteful processes with common sense solutions through the use of the seven steps of Value Stream Mapping.

It is designed specifically for managers new to, or just starting in, the project management area. This course brings you up-to-speed in current principles and practices of project management. Taught by certified Project Management Professionals working in the field, as well as academic practitioners, you will immediately apply what you have learned.

Public Speaking for Professionals (8 hours)

Shop Math Refresher (12-30 hours)

Most of the skilled, manufacturing and advanced technology occupations require a strong base in basic mathematical knowledge. This class will focus on the areas of need after an evaluation is made by College which will determine content and length. Areas of remediation may include, but are not limited to, the following: fractions, basic geometry, the Pythagorean Theorem, algebra and basic division and multiplication.

Print Reading and Shop Math for Fabricators (45 hours)

This course will demonstrate how to locate, interpret and utilize welding symbols, measurements, lines and other information found on working drawings, blueprints and technical documents. Students will be able to interpret technical drawings, sketches, blueprints as well as make measurements and calculations and then use those figures to accomplish fabrication requirements.

Intro to Welding Processes (45 hours)

This course provides trainees with relevant theory in oxy-fuel welding and cutting, shielded metallic arc welding and their applications. Also discussed is proper selection of power sources and settings, welding electrodes, shielding gases, joint configuration and safety and welding procedures. This course includes a lecture period, followed by a practical application or lab exercise that demonstrates the topics presented.

Welding Codes & Specifications (45 hours)

Learn welding codes and their applications. Upon successful completion, students should be able to explain codes and their function, use welding specifications and apply proper use of API, AWS and AME codes.

Intro to Oxy-Fuel Welding & Cutting (45 hours)

Emphasis on fuel gases, welding and cutting equipment. Covers advantages and disadvantages of fuel gases; maintenance of oxy-fuel welding set; demonstrates lighting, adjusting and extinguishing an oxy-fuel flare; and using an oxy-fuel cutting torch.

CNC/Metalworking Basics (40 hours)

This hands-on program will focus on a series of single skill sets that are stackable for career success. You will prepare to sit for the National Institute for Metalworking Skills certification test. The program will cover these key skill areas: CNC mill, lathe and grinder set up and operation; tool identification, set-up, use and maintenance; machine process; statistical process control; quality and cycle optimization; CNC program operation; fixture set up and operation; and CNC troubleshooting.

PLC Basics (40 hours)

Programmable Logic Controls (PCL) are an integral part of many devices, large and small. By the end of this course, the student will be able to create a PLC program from scratch. Students will learn the difference between digital and analog signals and how to bring them into a PLC, process them and send them back out. Students will also become familiar with a sufficient variety of ladder logic instructions.

Process Control for Operators (320 hours)

Process control jobs are in high demand, they’re high-paying and serve many industries, including energy, food processing and pharmaceutical manufacturing.

At Delaware County Community College, we’re prepared to train you for one of these jobs. Our Process Operator Academy is 320 hours and can be completed in less than eight weeks. The program will help you transition or advance seamlessly into a career as a process operator or technician in automated manufacturing and production facilities.

The program provides students with an introduction to the concepts, theories, principles, technical demands, hazards and accident-prevention aspects associated with the operation of processing equipment.

Responsibilities of a Process Control Technician Include:

  • Monitor control room functions of the delivery of products in an automated workflow
  • Maintain equipment, including valves, fittings and pressure and measurement equipment
  • Oversee the calibration of the equipment
  • Ensure that the facility complies with state and EPA regulations
  • Monitor the safety aspects of the equipment

Learn the art of dealing with people with problematic personalities. This class gives specific strategies to handle negativity and satisfy even the most difficult coworker, customer or manager.

Effective Customer Service with Role Play (16 hours)

This highly interactive class outlines the dos and don’ts of effective customer service. This class focusses on the importance of listening, speaking and acting professionally. Role play is an integral part of this class so that students can put what they have learned into action and carry the skills forward on their next work day.

Phone Skills and Email Etiquette (10 hours) or Email Etiquette (5 hours)

The two most popular and effective media for communication for vendors, customers and prospective clients are the telephone and email. There certainly are effective techniques as far as use of the telephone, and this course will provide students with an overview of those skills. Email has become an integral part of our business and non-business culture. However, more and more, email has devolved to a place where professionalism and basic grammar and spelling have been compromised. This class will show students the importance of being professional and provide helpful tips for staying that way.

Introduction to Outlook (10 hours)

Learn how to best use Outlook, Microsoft’s email, contact and calendar management program. Topics include creating, sending and managing messages; working with email attachments; and creating contacts and groups, tasks, appointments, events and meetings.

Excel Introduction (8 hours)

Learn to create, save, format, edit and print spreadsheets. Course topics include Excel environment, entering and editing data, modifying a worksheet, using functions, formatting worksheets and printing and creating charts.

Excel for the Workplace (20 hours)

Learn basics to intermediate concepts of spreadsheets. Topics include formatting, formulas, functions, charts, printing spreadsheets and working with multiple worksheets.

Excel Intermediate (12 hours)

Enhance a spreadsheet and use more advanced Excel techniques. Topics include working with multiple worksheets, customizing Excel, advanced charting and pivot tables, advanced formatting and validation, list management, auditing, templates and hyperlinks.

Word for the Workplace (20 hours)

This course will cover basic to intermediate topics including creating documents, editing, formatting, tables and printing. Creating and performing a mail merge is also covered in this class.

PowerPoint for the Workplace (20 hours)

Learn to create dynamic presentations. Topics include overview of the PowerPoint environment; using animation, charts and clipart; auto shapes and images; multimedia; customizing presentations; and Pack and Go and Web features.

Introduction to Photoshop (8 hours)

Learn this image-editing program used by the pros. Course topics include cropping and resizing images; selecting image areas; layers; composting; adjusting color and lighting; retouching; adding text; and preparing images for print and the web.
