Course Selections for Summer in Florence
The History of Science (SCI 110) 3 credits
This course traces the philosophical, cultural and technological developments that influenced the evolution of modern science. By examining these developments made over a span of two millennia, students identify the people, places, ideas, and discoveries that led to fundamental shifts in the way people obtain knowledge and investigate and understand the physical world. Specifically, the course explores the origin of the scientific method by tracing the changing role of experimenters, their experiments, and the tools they used. In addition, students will document the converging philosophical influences that resulted in the Scientific Renaissance and the Scientific Revolution. The course concludes by highlighting important scientific discoveries up to the present day and the continuing struggle between science and long-held misconceptions and beliefs.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of English Composition I (ENG 100) or its equivalent.

Cross-Cultural Attitudes through Literature (HUM 166) 3 credits
This humanities course explores the issue of culture shock through a survey of short fiction authored by famous international writers. Students will begin their studies with an introduction to the six phases of culture shock and their physical and emotional impact on the sojourner. As travelers become accustomed to the host culture they also become aware of the benefits and contributions each culture makes to the global community. Students will enhance traditional classroom instruction-readings and discussion-by experiencing on many levels, their personal cultural immersion in the daily life of the Italian people.

The Art and Architecture of Renaissance Florence (HUM 290) 3 credits
Our on site course in Florence surveys the most significant art (drawing, painting, sculpture, and ceramics) and architecture produced and displayed in the Italian city most associated with the birth of the Renaissance and its emphasis on humanism. In addition, students will be introduced to the history of Florence from its Roman beginnings to the 16th Century. On site lectures are supported with traditional classroom instruction at the CAPA Center, housed in the 15th Century Palazzo Galli-Tassi.
